The Writers House is finally legal!
No, but genuinely, during this year’s True Blue Weekend on the 20th of September, the Philadelphia Alumni Writers House celebrated its 21st birthday through a get-together event of current students, alumni from various years, and professors to celebrate what the Writers House has contributed to the community here on F&M’s campus and gather affiliates together to highlight its joys throughout the past years, from its birth to now.
The event mainly consisted of idle chit-chat accompanied by food and drinks, as well as conversations and reunions in the same space that first brought these people together many years ago.. There was also an agenda of speeches by current heads and members of the Writers House, such as Professor Kerry-Sherin Wright, as well as other professors like Nicholas Montemarano and Tamara Goeglein. Notably, a renga was also presented, which is a collection of quotes and single lines from other pieces of writing contributed by current students, alumni, and professors for the event. Each contributor stepped up to the mic and read their contribution to the whole party, going down the line until everyone who contributed had spoken, creating a long, poem-like piece as a tribute to the Writers House and what it stands for today. Additionally, goodie bags were offered by the Writers House, containing poetry books, and a randomized chance to receive one of the books written by either a current professor or an alumnus of the college as a send-off gift.
What a fun, and fitting way, to celebrate the birthplace of the writing and reading creatives here on our campus. Happy birthday, Writers House!
