Jennifer Lawrence and Robert Pattinson starred alongside each other for the first time in the new film directed by Lynne Ramsay, “Die My Love.” The two actors are both known for popular franchises in their filmography – “The Hunger Games” and “Twilight,” respectively – however this film could not be more different.
Centering on Grace, played by Lawrence, the film follows her journey as a new mother
living in Montana in an old house belonging to the family of her romantic partner Jackson, played by Pattinson. Outside of this basic description, the plot is difficult to explain. The viewer is immersed in the experiences of Grace as she navigates post-partum life and descends into madness. Like Grace, we question what is real and follow a somewhat confusing timeline of events.
A subplot also prominent to the film is how Jackson’s mother, Pam (played by Sissy Spacek), deals with the recent loss of her husband and Jackson’s father, Harry. Flashback scenes throughout the film show Harry, played by Nick Nolte, struggling in his old age up until his death. The flashbacks also give context to the endearing relationship between him and Grace.
Pam’s grief is especially important to the film as she lives near Grace and Jackson and has an important role in caring for their newborn baby as well as feeling concerned as Grace spirals. She and Grace are each dealing with their own complex and different emotions that overlap in some scenes.
The film is artsy and abstract, which means that viewers who expect a romantic comedy or straightforward drama will inevitably be confused and disappointed. However, the people willing to set those expectations aside and commit to the wacky ride will undoubtedly enjoy the show, as Lawrence and Pattinson both deliver emotional and relatable performances that add even more depth to their already-impressive careers.
