For his first year teaching at F&M, Professor Jacob Myers is offering two new English courses that are currently open for registration. He is a researcher in 18th- and 19th-century global Anglophone literature, also specializing in critical science studies. Last semester, he taught a CNX course, “Science / Fiction,” which examined how plague, evolution, and AI were theorized throughout texts across time. Additionally, he taught a course, “The Global Eighteenth Century,” in which students analyzed period works and 18th-century art in person at the Phillips Museum and the Special Collections in the Martin Library.

This semester, Myers is teaching two new courses, one of which is titled “Pride & Prejudice Across the Globe.” This class will explore why Austen’s novel is one of the most read English novels in history. The novel will be read slowly in conjunction with theoretical essays, as well as in comparison to global adaptations. This course is highly recommended for those interested in Austen’s work, as well as those who have never read her before and are interested in deconstructing her unique literary style.

The second new course taught by Myers is titled “The Gothic: Body Horrors to Haunted Houses,” which gives students a crash course in all things spooky! The class will ask how horror allows audiences to confront cultural issues that remain unsolved. Students will read Frankenstein, Dracula, and a novel by a Brontë sister of their choice. Movies such as Get Out and The Substance will also be used to track how the Gothic has been adapted to film.
